Founders Challenge Patch

Shatagee Woods Chapter has developed the Founders Patch for the purpose of promoting discovery of our region in the Northern section of the Adirondack Park. Our program is designed to support responsible outdoor recreating and to educate, inform and build awareness of our region. As participants complete a variety of activities, they will experience several facets of the natural, historical and geological milieu that is the Shatagee Woods domain.

Our region

We respectfully acknowledge the Mohawk Nation, known as the Kanyengehaga, or “people of the place of the flint,” and “keepers of the Eastern Door” of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.  We take this opportunity to thank the people on whose ancestral lands the Shatagee Woods Chapter resides in Northern New York.

The area known as the Shatagee Woods is described by Samuel H. Hammond in his 1859 publication of “…A Tramp in the Shatagee Woods…” Hammond describes the area as starting from Chazy Lake, moving west toward Bradley Lake (Pond) to Chateaugay Lake, Ragged Lake, and Indian Lake, then southward to Saranac Lake and back to the point of origin. Our geographic definition of the area includes what is known as Area 5 on the DEC location map (northern Franklin County and northwestern Clinton County); including Chazy and Sable Highlands, Titusville Mountain State Forest, Debar Mountain Wild Forest, and Taylor Pond Wild Forest.

Through our challenge patch, we hope to encourage individuals to explore the rich opportunities in our remote area of the Northern portion of the Adirondack Park and beyond; learning about the history, enjoying the beauty of the area and becoming more familiar with the Shatagee Woods portion of the park. Our goal is to inspire responsible recreating, conservation, and education.
